Memory Bottles on Ogijima, Japan

Memory Bottle on Ogijima - 1

This is Memory Bottles (記憶のボトル) by Mayumi Kuri.

The installation is located on the small island of Ogijima in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, and is part of Art Setouchi, the permanent art linked to the Setouchi Triennale (aka Setouchi International Art Festival), one of the most amazing art festival in Japan (and probably in the world).

The concept of the artwork is that the artist went around the island (that greatly suffers from depopulation) and either collected objects from abandoned houses or asked the residents to give her some, and she put them in a thousand little bottles that are now hanging in a small formerly abandoned warehouse where they’re lit as an artistic archive of the island.

You can find more detail there: Memory Bottles on Setouchi Explorer.

Don’t miss it if you’re ever in the area (and you should go to the area if given the chance).
